AG Todd Rokita investigating big tech over what he says is conservative ‘censorship’

Attorney General Todd Rokita on Wednesday announced he is launching an investigation into some of the country’s largest tech companies over what he says is conservative content censorship that may have “potentially harmed” Indiana consumers.

The investigation will center around how Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google and Twitter limit access to certain content. Rokita, in a release announcing the investigation, said these companies often delete or obscure “material reflecting a politically conservative point of view,” which in turn “prevents consumers from making informed choices.”

“In a free society, few assets are more important to consumers than access to information and the opportunity to express political viewpoints in meaningful forums,” Rokita said. “It is potentially harmful and unfair for these companies to manipulate content in ways they do not publicly discuss or that consumers do not fully understand.”

Rokita, a Republican, has been outspoken about content censorship on social media platforms. In February, the then-newly-elected attorney general tweeted a Valentine’s Day card featuring a drawing of President Donald Trump next to the words: “You stole my heart like a 2020 election.”

Twitter blocked the tweet from receiving replies, retweets and likes and warned the false messaging about election integrity could prompt violence.

Rokita at the time chided Twitter for flagging his tweet, referring to “Big Tech’s frequent censorship of speech.”
