Orlando Mayor Demings: DeSantis classified WWE ‘essential business’

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said Monday the WWE was deemed an essential business and allowed to stay open after “some conversation” with the governor’s office.

The designation allows WWE to resume live cable-TV broadcasts and wrestling matches three nights a week from its Orlando training facility and Full Sail University.

During a news conference Monday, Demings said WWE was not initially called an “essential business,” a designation allowing it to stay open during the state’s “shelter-in-place” order, but the decision was reversed.

ESPN reported an April 9 memo from the Florida Division of Emergency Management outlined additional essential services beyond the governor’s original list that matched WWE’s operations in Orlando. The memo stated additional exemptions included, “Employees at a professional sports and media production with a national audience — including any athletes, entertainers, production team, executive team, media team and any others necessary to facilitate including services supporting such production — only if the location is closed to the general public.”
